PrivateBee: Smart Navigation for Urban Aviation

With the rise of delivery drones, flying taxis (VTOL), and autonomous aircraft, urban skies are becoming a new highway to organize. This is where PrivateBee comes in—a collaborative 4D GPS designed to guide both human pilots and automated systems safely.

Unlike traditional GPS systems, which are limited to position (latitude, longitude, altitude), PrivateBee adds the time dimension to anticipate weather conditions, traffic density, and regulatory constraints in real time.

What is PrivateBee for?

  • Optimize air routes: less fuel, less noise, and reduced travel time.
  • Prevent collisions through intelligent algorithms and a 3D vision of the airspace.
  • Automatically adapt to unexpected events: changing weather, restricted areas, medical emergencies…
  • Support all types of aircraft: delivery drones, helicopters, light aircraft, autonomous systems.

How does it work?

PrivateBee relies on real-time weather data, trajectory optimization models, and an intuitive 3D interface, integrated on-board or via an application. It draws inspiration from smart road GPS systems like Waze, but adapted to air traffic.

A collaborative and open-source project

Developed as part of a collaboration between several engineering schools, PrivateBee is released under the Lesser Open Bee License 1.3, encouraging open contribution and reuse.

A tangible impact

Technological: towards better integration of drones and VTOL into urban mobility.

Environmental: reduction of CO₂ emissions and noise pollution.

Economic: time savings and cost reduction for operators.
